The details
The hand crank radio that keeps going
The Hollowmere is a compact hand crank radio with DAB+ and FM, a 3-LED flashlight, a reading light and a 4,500 mAh power bank. Keep it in the kitchen drawer for power cuts and storms, in the car, or in your go-bag for camping and hiking. When the outlets are dead, you can still recharge it by sun, crank or AAA batteries.
Four ways to keep it running
- USB-C at home the quickest way to fill the 4,500 mAh battery, so the radio sits charged and ready on the shelf.
- Solar panel on top tops up the battery in daylight on a windowsill, a dashboard or the top of your pack.
- Hand crank on the back folds flat when stored. Turn it when there is no sun and no socket, and you are not stuck waiting.
- AAA backup press MODE (Li/AAA) to run on standard AAA batteries when the built-in battery is flat.
Digital radio, simple buttons
- DAB/DAB+ and FM clear digital radio where DAB+ is broadcast, plus FM 87 to 108 MHz almost everywhere else.
- Scan, store, recall MENU/scan finds stations, TUN+ stores your favorites and TUN- brings them back in one press.
- Clear display shows the band, signal strength, clock and battery status at a glance, even in a dark room.
- Headphone jack listen quietly at night without waking the house or the tent.
Light when the lights go out
- 3-LED flashlight on the end of the radio, so you can find the breaker box, the stairs or the trail back to camp.
- Reading light bar a wide front panel that lights a whole table, tent or page instead of one harsh spot.
- SOS button a separate orange button you can find by feel, with no menus to dig through in the dark.
A hand crank radio that charges phones
- USB-A 5V output plug in your own cable to give a phone or headlamp a top-up when the power is out.
- Battery level lights four LEDs show 100, 75, 50 and 25 percent, so you know what is left before you count on it.

Before you buy
Does a hand crank radio work without batteries?
This one has a built-in 4,500 mAh rechargeable battery, so you do not need AAA batteries to use it. The hand crank and solar panel recharge that battery when there is no outlet. AAA batteries are only an extra backup.
Can this emergency radio charge my phone?
Yes. Plug your phone's cable into the USB-A 5V port on the side. The 4,500 mAh battery is shared with the radio and lights, so think of it as a top-up for one phone rather than several full charges.
Will DAB+ work where I live?
DAB+ works where it is broadcast, which includes the UK, much of Europe and Australia. Run a scan with MENU/scan to see which stations come in. Where there is no DAB, switch to FM, which works almost everywhere.
What is the best way to charge it?
USB-C is the fastest. Charge it fully before you store it, then use the solar panel and hand crank to top up when there is no outlet. Check the battery LEDs every few months and recharge if the level has dropped.
Can I listen with headphones?
Yes. There is a headphone jack under the side cover, next to the charging ports.
