The details
Keep listening when the power goes out
The Kestrel is a hand crank radio with AM/FM, a built-in LED flashlight and a 2,000 mAh battery that can top up your phone. Keep it in a kitchen drawer for power cuts and storms, in the car, or in a go-bag for camping and hiking. When the outlet is dead, charge it from the sun, the crank or AAA batteries.
Four ways to keep it running
- USB charging fill the battery from a wall adapter or computer, so it is ready the day you need it.
- Solar panel tops the battery up slowly in daylight, so it is not draining while it waits in your kit.
- Hand crank turn it when there is no sun and no outlet, and the radio keeps playing.
- AAA backup slide the switch from LI-ION to AAA and run it on standard batteries from the drawer.
Emergency radio for storms and outages
- AM and FM bands tune local news and stations with a simple analog dial, so you hear updates without a signal.
- Weather band Green, Orange and Black also tune NOAA weather broadcasts at 162.400 to 162.550 MHz.
- Telescopic antenna pull it up for clearer reception, push it down to pack it away.
- One knob for volume turn it to switch on and set the level, and turn it back to off.
Light and a lifeline for your phone
- LED flashlight a front-facing beam that helps you find the stairs, your gear or the breaker box.
- USB output plug in your phone with its own cable and top it up, so you can still call and text.
- SOS alarm the maker lists an alarm function to help draw attention when you need it.
Made for the bag, not the shelf
- Splash resistant rated IPX3 by the maker, so light rain and splashes at camp are not a worry.
- Tough ABS shell a solid body with rubber-style corners that handles life in a pack or a trunk.
- Wrist strap and carabiner clip it to a backpack, tent loop or hook, so it stays within reach.

Before you buy
Does a hand crank radio work without batteries?
Yes. The crank and the solar panel charge the built-in 2,000 mAh battery, and the radio runs from that battery. You do not need AAA batteries at all; they are just an extra backup if you want one.
Is this a NOAA weather radio?
Green, Orange and Black tune the NOAA weather band (162.400 to 162.550 MHz) as well as AM and FM. Blue, Red and White are AM/FM only. If weather broadcasts matter to you, choose Green, Orange or Black.
Can it charge my phone?
Yes. Plug your phone into the radio's USB output with your phone's own cable. The 2,000 mAh battery gives most phones a partial top-up, enough to stay reachable for calls and messages, not a full charge.
How fast does the solar panel charge it?
Slowly. The panel tops up the battery in daylight, but it does not replace a wall charger. For best results, charge fully by USB before storing it, then use solar and the crank to keep it going.
Can I use it in the rain?
It is rated IPX3 by the maker, which covers splashes and light rain. It is not waterproof, so keep it out of heavy rain and never submerge it.
