The details
When the grid goes down, it keeps going.
The Northwake is a hand crank radio with DAB/DAB+ and FM, a 3-LED flashlight and a 4,500 mAh battery you can refill from the sun, the crank or USB-C. It is built for power outages, storm nights, the car and the go-bag: one compact emergency radio that brings you news, light and a phone top-up, with three AAA batteries as a last backup.
Four ways to keep it running
- Solar panel on top tops up the battery whenever the radio sits in direct sun, so it is ready when you need it.
- Fold-out hand crank adds charge by hand when there is no sun and no outlet.
- USB-C input charges the 4,500 mAh battery fully from any USB-C cable before you store it.
- 3x AAA backup the MODE button, marked Li/AAA, switches to AAA batteries when the built-in battery is empty.
Digital radio, simple controls
- DAB/DAB+ and FM clear digital stations where they are broadcast, plus FM almost anywhere.
- Scan and store scan for stations, save favorites with TUN+ and bring them back with TUN-, even in the dark.
- Clear LCD screen shows the station, clock, signal strength and battery level at a glance.
- Headphone jack listen privately when others in the house or tent are sleeping.
Light when the lights go out
- 3-LED flashlight built into the end of the radio, with its own button on top, to light a path or a fuse box.
- Front light bar a wide, soft white light for reading or lighting a room.
- Red and blue warning light the light bar blinks red and blue to make you easier to spot at night.
- Dedicated SOS button sits right next to the power button, so it is easy to find by touch.
Emergency radio, backup phone charger
- 5 V USB output plug in your phone cable and draw power from the 4,500 mAh battery to stay reachable.
- Four-step battery lights see at a glance whether you are at 100, 75, 50 or 25 percent.
- Grab-and-go size about 7 inches long with a wrist strap, so it fits a go-bag, day pack or glovebox.

Before you buy
Does a hand crank radio work without batteries?
Turning the crank adds charge to the built-in 4,500 mAh battery, so you can power the radio up without an outlet or AAA batteries. The solar panel tops it up in direct sun, too. For the longest run time, charge it fully over USB-C before you store it.
Can this emergency radio charge my phone?
Yes. Plug your phone cable into the 5 V USB output and it draws from the 4,500 mAh battery. That battery also runs the radio and lights, so how much your phone gets depends on how much you have already used.
Will the DAB+ radio work where I live?
Only where DAB or DAB+ is broadcast, which includes the UK, Australia and much of Europe. Most of the US has no DAB service, so there you will use FM. Check your local coverage before you rely on digital stations.
How do I switch to AAA batteries?
Load three AAA batteries into the compartment on the back, then use the MODE button, marked Li/AAA, to switch from the built-in battery to the AAA batteries.
How should I store it for an emergency?
Charge it fully over USB-C, keep a set of fresh AAA batteries with it and top it up every few months. A spot near a sunny window lets the solar panel keep the battery topped up.
